While building a request body in Karate DSL, I ran into a small but confusing issue.

I had a value returned from a Java helper:

Then I used it to build a JSON request:

```

I expected:

}
```

But Karate was creating:

```json
{
  "booking_id": "bookingId"
}
```

## Why It Happens

When Karate parses an inline JSON object, values are not always evaluated as JavaScript expressions. In this case, `bookingId` was treated as literal text instead of the variable's value.

## The Fix

Wrap the JSON object in parentheses:

```plaintext
* def myRequest = ({ "booking_id": bookingId })
```

Now Karate evaluates the expression correctly and produces:

```json
{
  "booking_id": 123456
}
```

## What's Special About the Parentheses?

The parentheses tell Karate to evaluate the entire object as a JavaScript expression. Once the object is evaluated by the JavaScript engine, variables such as `bookingId` in this example, are resolved to their actual values instead of being treated as strings.

That's it. If you ever see Karate sending a variable name instead of its value, check whether your JSON object needs to be wrapped in parentheses.

Instead of clean API test output, your execution gets filled with Thymeleaf configuration details, HTML processors, and internal engine setup logs.

The fastest and cleanest way to keep your console readable is to explicitly set the log level for Thymeleaf to `INFO` or `WARN` in your logging configuration file.

One of the most useful features in Karate DSL is the ability to reuse logic by invoking external feature files or utility scripts.

For this, Karate provides two very similar functions: `call` and `callonce`.

At first glance they seem almost identical, but their execution behavior is very different:

* `call` executes every time it is reached.
* `callonce` executes once and reuses the cached result.

I realized how important this distinction was while working on a test suite where a utility feature declared in the `Background` was unintentionally triggering the same API request before every scenario because I was using `call` instead of `callonce`.

In small suites this may go unnoticed, but in larger suites it can lead to unnecessary API traffic, slower execution times, and redundant setup operations.

That's why understanding when to use each one is essential for building scalable and efficient Karate test suites.

## Where These Functions Can Be Used

Both `call` and `callonce` can be used:

* inside a `Background`,
* or directly inside a `Scenario`.

However, their impact becomes more noticeable when used in a `Background`, because the `Background` executes before every scenario.

## Example

```

If the feature contains 10 scenarios, the authentication feature above will execute 10 times.

In cases like this, `callonce` is often the better choice.

## 1. Using call (For Fresh or Independent Data)

Use `call` when each scenario needs its own unique or isolated data.

This is useful when:

* Tests should not share state.
* Data collisions must be avoided.
* Setup data should be recreated every time.

## Example: Creating Independent Orders

We'll build a simple **Book API** where clients can:

* fetch books
* create books
* update books
* delete books

## What Are the Key Components of GraphQL?

Most GraphQL APIs are built around these core components:

* Schema
* Types
* Fields
* Arguments

So today I’ll show you a quick trick to get the **[cURL](https://www.codeqazone.com/what-is-curl)** command of an endpoint directly from your browser’s **Developer Tools (DevTools)**.

This will save you time when testing endpoints. If you already have the endpoint available from a web app, you’ll see how convenient this is. It’s just copy, paste, and execute.

Let’s begin!

## 1. Go to the Network tab and locate the endpoint

Open your browser DevTools (F12 or right-click → Inspect), go to the **Network** tab, and locate the request you want to extract the cURL from.

But in real, day-to-day QA work, teams don’t use them all. They combine a few, depending on what each project demands.

I wanted to share something about this tool because, although it’s incredibly useful, many people in tech still don’t know much about it, and honestly, I didn’t either at first.

I first heard about curl while debugging an API issue. When a senior developer asked me to “send the curl” and I froze. I messed it up, it was a bit embarrassing but after that experience (and some trial and error), I realized how simple and useful it really is.

If you’re new to curl too, this post will give you a beginner-friendly intro so you can start using it confidently. Let’s start!

## What is curl?

**curl** (short for **Client URL**) is a command-line tool that lets you send and receive data from servers using a URL. It’s widely used to test APIs and interact with HTTP endpoints without needing a frontend, browser, or tools like Postman. You can use it from a terminal on Linux, macOS, and even Windows (either installed directly or via Git Bash or WSL).

curl supports many protocols: **HTTP, HTTPS, FTP**, and more, but today its most common use is ***API testing over HTTP/HTTPS.***

Even though there are tools that make things easier than using `curl` in the console, this tool is still worth understanding since it can give you direct visibility into what happens behind the scenes:

## Final Thoughts

You can identify these paremeters by looking at what's coming after the `?` in your endpoint url. And to handle multiple parameters, a `&` (ampersand) is added in between each to form what is known as a *query string*. Here’s an example of a `GET` request with query parameters:

Here, `status=active` and `page=2` are query parameters.

As part of a fix I worked on some time ago, I needed to title case a string in Javascript for a group of sentences that would later be used to validate other business logic. The challenge was that these sentences required special considerations when applying title case correctly.

Even though this was a specific case for a particular need, I saw this as a good opportunity not only to save my script solution for future use but also to use it for this article to share a few ways to **_title case sentences_**.

I hope you find this helpful, let's begin!

## What Title Case means

_Title case just means converting to uppercase the first letter of every word in a sentence while the other ones remain in lowercase._

## Examples

There are different ways you can find and use to _convert a sentence to title case in Javascript_, here are a few:

### 1. Using replace method and regex

The shortest way to accomplish this, we use regex to match only the first letter of each word to then replace it as uppercase.

**_Side note:_** _it's good to normalize the string by converting everything first to lowercase before actually converting to title case._

### 2. Using the map() function

We first turn the sentence into an array with ```str.toLowerCase().split(' ')``` then, when using the **map()**, this will do a callback function for each element in the array where with ```word.charAt(0).toUpperCase() + word.substr(1)```  we transform the element and build a new array from the results.

## Applying title case with exceptions

There can be cases where not all words in the sentence would need to be converted, which was the case I run into, here was my solution, which is basically using the **map()** way but adding the condition to check if the current word was or not eligible for title case.

There are many options out there we could use to convert sentences to title case, we just need to go with the one that works best for our needs.

Also, keep in mind that there could be edge cases where converting to title case can be used or adapted to, it will depend on what exactly needs to be accomplished with it and how it's going to be used since there can be scenarios where it will could probably be impossible to always be correct when the input has been transformed.

The technical aspects of QA, such as system analysis, debugging, and understanding the code, were familiar to me and relatively easy to handle.

That was the easy part. The real work came in shifting my mindset from building software to ensuring its quality. I had to start looking at the product from a different perspective where the focus isn’t just on building but on *breaking* it and making sure it works as intended. This mental shift was a bit more difficult than I expected, but it gave me a completely new and valuable perspective on software development. And that was a good thing.

## The Hard Truths of Being on “The Other Side”

I soon realized that the biggest challenge wasn’t learning testing techniques, the real challenge was facing the stigma against QA roles. As a developer, I didn’t fully appreciate the value of QA until I stepped into that role myself. With now being in this other side of the line I have come to see how QA is often underestimated. Surprisingly, most people, including developers and even managers, assume QA is there just “click buttons” or say random things. That perception makes it harder to get recognition, regardless of your technical background.

QA can be as demanding as development, it is not easy work, you have to wear a lot of hats to really succeed. Whether you’re running into last-minute bugs during critical releases or dealing with tight deadlines, regressions, whatever it is, QA comes with its own set of challenges that require patience, attention to detail, sometimes a good technical depth, and, most importantly, strong communication skills.

## Becoming a Better Engineer

This switch made me a more complete engineer. As a developer, my world revolved around feature tickets and solving bugs. But as a QA engineer, my focus shifted to ensuring that code was functioning correctly, wasn’t causing unexpected bugs, and met product requirements.

This broader perspective has changed how I write, test and think about code.  It gave me empathy for other roles, a stronger sense of product thinking, and a more holistic approach to problem-solving. I now see the application as a whole, and my commitment to quality will stay with me—whether I’m coding or testing.

## Finding My Passion in Automation

The turning point for me was automation. It felt like a “coming home” moment for me. Being able to write automated tests reconnected me with my developer roots. I realized I could work on test frameworks, automate frontend and backend tests, optimize pipelines, and build tools and workflows that help the entire team move faster and catch issues earlier.

That blend of development and QA made me more effective and reignited my passion for coding. I could use all my technical skills in service of something bigger than just writing features, with this, I can contribute to shape the entire product, but most importantly, it made me feel like I was back in control of the code—something I’d missed as a QA tester.

## Advice for QAs: The Value of Coding

To my fellow QA engineers,  don’t let anyone make you doubt your worth. QA engineers are software engineers who specialize in testing. In a field where it’s easy to feel overlooked, remember that your skills and knowledge are powerful. Hold onto that confidence. I’ve holding into that to carry on this path, and it’s actually being good, I have being learning a lot with that mindset.

And if there’s one piece of advice I can give you, it’s: *learn to code*. I strongly encourage you to do so. Understanding how the system works under the hood will level up your testing and confidence. It will make you more effective and improve your communication with developers. It will not only make you better at your job, but it will also open up new opportunities in your career.

## Advice for Developers: Don’t Forget About Testing

To my fellow developers, It’s not just about writing code that works, write code that’s testable and maintainable. You may think that QA is just a side role, but testing is just as important as coding. Collaborate with your QA engineer, don’t get defensive when they find issues. That feedback is there to help make the product better.

QA engineers who can speak your language and understand your code are powerful teammates. And someone with experience in both QA and development? That’s not a red flag, it’s *a big strength*. Remember that we’re all working toward the same goal: delivering a reliable, high-quality product to the end user.

## Final Thoughts: Build Your Own Path

Although I still feel some uncertainty about how my career path will unfold. I don’t have all the answers about where this transition will take me and that’s okay. Uncertainty is part of the journey. What matters is staying open to growth and embracing the challenges along the way. I’m still learning, still improving, and still figuring things out as I go.

It might feel risky to shift away from what you’ve known for years, but it doesn’t have to mean leaving everything behind. It’s also completely valid to walk away and explore a different path altogether. Ultimately, it’s up to us to decide how we spend our time on this planet. If you’ve spent 10+ years doing one thing, why not try something else? People do it all the time.

The path is challenging and can be tough, yes, but it’s also full of growth. You’ll expand your skills, gain new perspectives, and become a better engineer and maybe even a more fulfilled person. Whatever path you choose, make sure it’s something you enjoy and grow from. After all, it’s your time and you get to decide how to spend it.
